“After taxiing along the runway, the Linux plane finally looks
ready for take off. The momentum has been there for some time, but
it took Judge Thomas Penfold Jackson’s landmark antitrust ruling
against Microsoft for the chocks to be pulled away. Even his
decision on Tuesday June 20 to postpone the stringent conduct
remedies slated to start on September 5 isn’t going to stop this
bird from flying.”

“Among the frozen conduct remedies were provisions stopping
Microsoft from using its monopoly position to browbeat computer
makers and software companies into choosing Windows products.
It appears that, even without the conduct remedies, many of the
industry’s stronger players now feel confident enough to defy
Microsoft and include Linux in their strategic plans. Indeed,
recent weeks have seen a number of important announcements along
these lines.

“For example, on June 20 Dell announced its One Source Alliance
with Red Hat. It’s a wide-ranging agreement that will see Dell
offer factory-installed Red Hat Linux on its complete line of
servers alongside Windows 2000 and Novel Netware. Dell says it will
work with Red Hat to develop customised Linux systems for Dell
servers and will provide customers with global, around the clock,
Linux support.”
