LinuxWorld: A SPARC powerhouse

“Linux is taking over a wide range of hardware platforms but,
aside from the Intel architecture platform, the first few were the
SPARC and the Alpha. That’s because those two platforms comprised
most of the commercial server systems used by Internet companies at
one time. Linux/SPARC now follows just a step behind the
Linux/Intel distributions available from major Linux vendors. In
this review, we look at the Rave Systems RT-AXi based on the single
processor UltraSPARC AXi engine.”

“Rave Systems has long been a Unix vendor, particularly in the
area of Sun-compatible systems. The company has been in business
for 12 years, long enough to see the ups and downs of the Unix
market and the rise of the desktop PC to overtake the UNIX
workstation. Not to be surpassed, Rave is keeping up with the
times, and it now offers Linux on the same models available for
Solaris.”

“You may wonder why someone would run Linux on a SPARC
rather than on an Intel-based machine that would have a larger
selection of binary-compatible software. The simple answer is that
many companies already have the hardware.”
