“Sorcerer GNU/Linux (SGL) is a relatively new
distribution aimed primarily at system administrators. Kyle Sallee,
SGL’s creator, released it to FreshMeat in July 2001. I asked
Sallee recently if he meant SGL for use by sysadmins on boxes they
maintain or on their personal machines. Both, he said.

Sallee based the name (and the names of many of its features) on
the notion that sysadmins are wizards, and much of what they
accomplish is, to the common user, magic. Sorcerer’s magic allows
you to build and maintain a Linux system based on the very latest
stable source code for each component, from the kernel to X,
compiled on and for your machine.

If you want to install an application on an SGL box, for
example, you can do it by simply typing cast application-name .
This assumes you have a spell for that application and Internet
connectivity, that is. The spell you cast is a script that locates
the latest stable source code for the application, downloads it to
your system, configures it for your machine, compiles, and installs
it. Pure magic.”
