LinuxWorld: For love or money – An interview with Chris Wing

Chris Wing is a 21-year-old math/physics student at the
University of Michigan. Over the past year, he has labored to
create a version of Linux suitable for use by the college of
engineering, where he works as a programmer.

“The result of his efforts, now in beta, is being tested by
nearly a dozen users at the university. If all goes well, the
distribution will be ready for general release in about a
month….”

“LinuxWorld: I’ve never heard of a Linux distribution for a
university before — what is this all about?”

“Chris Wing: All we’re doing, basically, is taking a standard
Red Hat distribution and customzing it, adding the things necessary
to make it work within [the engineering college’s] computer
network.”

“I believe we have over a thousand Unix machines, so we’ve had a
very mature Unix network for many years now. I’ve been trying to
get Linux to behave identically to the existing Unix workstations,
so people who are familiar with the Unix resources on campus can
use a Linux machine or set up a Linux machine in their offices,
dorm rooms, or homes and have the same resources as a computer
lab.”
