“So you’re looking for the pieces to form a team development
environment entirely for Linux. You can use any combination of
Linux code distributions, open source or free software that runs on
Linux, or commercial Linux software. The goal is to use Linux to
build new multi-platform, multi-tier, Internet-enabled
applications. “

“This multi-part feature will examine those software
components available for Linux users requiring a full team-based
productivity environment. This first installment looks at
components available with typical Linux distributions.
The
second will seek out open source and free tools. The third will
examine commercial software alternatives.”

“For a typical Linux distribution, I turned to Caldera’s
OpenLinux, the version I run at home. For full network features,
there’s also an OpenLinux server. However, virtually all of the
tools found in OpenLinux are also available in some form for other
distributions.”
