The search is now on! The Linux User Group of Singapore will
present the annual LUGS Awards at the Singapore Linux Conference
2001, held from 21-24 March 2001 at the Singapore International
Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The LUGS Awards are a set of
accolades given to Linux vendors for their outstanding
contributions to the rapid development of the Linux operating
system. Although only in it’s second year, the LUGS Awards had
gained tremendous recognition as one of the most talked-about
awards in the industry, and had been labelled as the Academy Awards
for the Linux community. We are now accepting nominations for the
following 9 awards categories:

1. Singapore Linux Offering of the
Year

Only for nominees headquartered in Singapore. This is intended to
be for Linux products and services that have made a real impact on
the Linux community here and elsewhere. The goal is to recognize a
Singapore Linux vendor that has distinguished itself and done the
local community proud.

2. Singapore Business Solution of the
Year

Only for nominees headquartered in Singapore. This is intended to
be for corporations that have embraced Linux and achieved reduced
total cost of ownership, performance gains, or unprecedented cost
savings. The goal is to recognize organizations that have succeeded
in realizing value from Linux solutions and to help publicize their
success in an effort to aid further industry adoption.

3. Best New Hardware
Open to international nominees. This is intended to cover server
systems, embedded systems, appliances, etc. The goal is to pick a
*new* hardware system that is news in itself, and that has greatly
fueled industry adoption of Linux by everyone everywhere.

4. Best New Enterprise Application –
Wireless

Open to international nominees. This is intended to cover *new*
software systems that have played a very significant role in
enabling today’s wireless facilities. The goal is to show that
Linux is playing a huge role in powering the backend to provide a
superior wireless user experience.

5. Best New Enterprise Application –
Infrastructure

Open to international nominees. This is intended to cover *new*
software systems that have been highly successful in addressing
serious customer needs in the I.T. infrastructure space – mail
servers, DNS servers, web servers, application servers, RDBMSes,
etc. The idea is to show the world that Linux is now a serious
operating system and has made alarming inroads into corporate
datacenters.

6. Best New Enterprise Application –
Security

Open to international nominees. This is intended to cover *new*
software systems that have changed the landscape of Linux security,
whether by delivering much needed functionality, or by creating
unique new capabilities for Linux systems.

7. Best New Gadget
Open to international nominees. This includes any *new* and cool
Linux devices that have moved the world and sent enthusiasts
running to the stores. The idea is to show that Linux is indeed
everywhere and is being used by everyone.

8. Most Promising New Technology
Open to international nominees. This includes *new* technologies
that are promising to change computing on/with Linux. The idea is
to provide one of many examples to show how many novel and new
technologies show up on Linux first.

9. Temasek Award
The show’s highest award, the Temasek Award, will be presented to
the most deserving local/regional company – for class leading
innovation, flawless execution, social responsibility and business
excellence. One of the local/regional nominees in the above
categories will win the show’s most coveted Temasek Award.

Nomination Process
We welcome nominations from any individuals who are convinced that
certain product/products have stand out among the best. Please feel
free to share this call for nominations with others who might want
to make a submission, and you will stand to win a M100 Palm Pilot.
As the LUGS awards are to mark excellence, they will only be given
when justified by the quality of the nominations. Therefore, if no
truly outstanding entries are received in a particular category, no
award shall be given. The award recipients will be selected by a
panel of independent judges comprised of leaders from the various
business, academic, and civic organizations.

The Awards Ceremony
The LUGS Awards Ceremony will take place on March 23 at Whiskey
Still Millenia Walk in Singapore. The tickets are now up for grabs,
and discounts will be given for group purchases.

The LUGS Awards winners will be announced in 23 March at the
