MySQL Admin Cookbook

“Like the O’Reilly Cookbook series, the Schneller and Schwedt
book contains “recipes” of various MySQL tasks and solutions to
problems, presented in a “hands-on” fashion. The book is organized
into 9 chapters, holding a total of 99 recipes in all. Each recipe
introduces the task, tells how to prepare to perform the task,
offers the specific steps, describes how the task is supposed to
work, and lists any additional information related to the task.

“While the book is written for both beginning and experienced
MySQL admins, it doesn’t cover any of the ground-level basics of
learning MySQL, so I’d recommend you get your feet wet using MySQL
before tackling the recipes the book offers. The book is also very
Linux/UNIX/OpenSource-centric, so although solutions that apply to
Windows users are present, the bias is to perform tasks from a
Linux/UNIX user’s point of view. For instance, the recipe
“Extracting information from verbose output using the MySQL
command-line client” on pages 114 – 116 can be performed only using
Linux, UNIX, or Mac OS X platforms. This is refreshing for me,
since I’ve encountered too many books that show the Windows way of
doing things, even with open source applications, without
illustrating how the same job could be done using Linux/UNIX.”
