Network Computing: SiteScape Forum [Review]: In Groupware, Looks Aren’t Everything

“…SiteScape has what you’re looking for in its Forum, a very
capable group collaboration package. It offers everything from
discussion groups to calendars. You can use it for workflow, too,
and it’s small and surprisingly easy to run. It’s also as ugly as a
Father’s Day tie.”

“… And now it runs on Linux, too. I tested a beta version of
SiteScape Forum 4.1 running on Red Hat Linux 5.2. Despite a
relatively high price and a somewhat difficult installation,
SiteScape Forum is a feature-rich and capable application-but only
if you have solid Unix or Linux experience.”

“SiteScape Forum was, until recently, an AltaVista product.
Digital ran AltaVista, and when Compaq Computer Corp. bought
Digital, Forum was spun off. SiteScape retained the AltaVista
engineers, so the same team that put Forum on other platforms did
the work on the Linux release.”

“Priced at $3,995 (Workflow costs $2,995, and pricing is the
same for all platforms), Site-Scape Forum isn’t joining IBM, Sybase
and others wooing the Linux camp with free software. With its rough
edges and dated user interface, I’d like to see Site-Scape sell for
less money, but its features and stability make it worth the asking
price.”
