NetworkWorld: Open-source printing, via CUPS

“Network administrators looking to simplify printing on
their Linux networks, or in a mixed Unix/Linux environment, should
look into the Common Unix Printing System.”

“CUPS is open source software based on the Internet Printing
Protocol (IPP) version 1.1. IPP adds printing extensions to HTTP,
allowing Web documents to be printed to remote printers via IP.
This protocol is in the process of approval by the Internet
Engineering Task Force, and has support from industry vendors
including Hewlett-Packard, Lexmark and Canon.”

“The system runs on a single server and is based on its
Scheduler application. The Scheduler is a Web server that runs on a
LAN. … While CUPS was originally designed for Unix, it is
completely Linux compatible, and might be useful in administering
large networks where Unix and Linux both live.”
