“The open source Linux operating system won’t be challenging the
dominance of Microsoft Corp… anytime soon but does stand to make
significant inroads to the Japanese market in the next five years,
research firm IDC Japan said Monday.”

“On an estimated 2,200 machines in 1998, IDC predicts the Linux
user-base will expand to 10,000 servers in the current year, 22,000
in 2000, 34,000 in 2001, 50,000 in 2002 and 65,000 in 2003. The
predictions represent a compound annual growth rate over the next
five years of 97 percent.
Most of this growth, said IDC, will
be at the expense of closely related Unix systems.”
