“By all accounts, the latest version has a lot to offer, but the
majority of sites using Apache are still using the 1.3 series. What
does the future hold for the world’s most popular Web server–and
is it a bad sign that the new release has not caught on like
wildfire?

“Few companies work with as many machines running Apache as
Rackspace Managed Hosting. The company’s chief technology
evangelist, Dirk Elmendorf, told NewsFactor that Rackspace will
stick with the 1.3 series for some time. ‘It’s a serviceable
workhorse,’ he said. ‘I’m not looking for new features at the
Apache level so far, and whenever they have a security issue [with
1.3] it’s fixed quickly.’

“Indeed, Apache 1.3.x is a known quantity. ‘[With a new version]
we might hit something we don’t know about,’ Elmendorf added. ‘New
features make all sorts of problems for us…'”
