“Shipments of the Linux operating system in the server market
surged by 212 percent in 1998, a growth rate that outpaced Windows
NT, NetWare, UNIX, and all other server operating systems. Linux’s
market share leapt from 6.8 percent to an estimated 17.2 percent of
server operating system shipments, according to a study from
International Data Corporation. The number of copies of Linux
shipped to customers more than tripled from 1997 to 1998.”

“IBM recently announced its intentions to consider offering 24
hours a day, 7 days a week support for the Linux operating system.
Originally developed just six years ago, and now available as
freeware, Linux currently has an estimated 7 million users.”
