Open Source IT: Mainframe Users Like Running Linux, but Management Still Cautious

“IBM bestowed its official seal of approval on Linux for the
S/390 mainframe in May, giving a boost to a platform that has been
in use informally since January of this year. While IBM’s
recognition of the port as a fully-supported IBM product should
boost acceptance of Linux S/390, Linux as a mainframe operating
system still has a ways to go before it is widely
accepted.“

“The official product launch of Linux on the mainframe includes
distribution deals with TurboLinux Inc. and SuSE Inc. as well as
internal support from IBM Global Services. IBM also plans to
introduce its IMS and DB2 databases, CICS transaction processing
system, WebSphere e-commerce server, and other middleware products
for the S/390 platform in the fourth quarter.”

“IBM’s port of Linux to the mainframe has attracted plenty of
interest from users. The code has been downloaded 2,100 times since
it was first made available in January, according to IBM. And a
Linux for S/390 mainframe mailing list run by Harry Williams, IT
director at Marist College, near IBM’s headquarters in Somers, New
York, has 686 members.”
