opOpinion: Lightsaber OS

The world of Unix is the “certain galactic quarters” Kenobi
was talking about. Here the Jedi knights work daily with
command-lines, text editors and character-based Source programming
environments.
Like the world of book-readers (as opposed to
TV- and VCR-watchers), it is an archaic, plain, simple,
high-quality congregation of talents. It would seem that some of
the purity might be lost by using the X Window System, but in fact
the Jedi knights use the GUI to augment their use of lightsabers
rather than leave the fold.”

“I remember, reading in a history book, a fear that the early
Christians voiced after the decree that Christianity should be the
official religion of the Roman Empire: that the consolidation of
the religion with the secular state would spoil the purity of the
Christian religion. Render unto Caesar, they said, and keep the
Christian religion to the spiritual elite, which shall administer
the masses.”

“There is a fear of tainting the Unixoid purity of Linux by
dumbing it down for the masses, mixed with the thrill of turning
Linux into a mainstream OS. Many an opinion here hints for two
versions of Linux, the dumbed-down “consumer” version, and a
he-man-macho-elito “hacker” version.”
