desktop-operating-system roost, and it has done so for several
years. It has had many challengers, and all but one have failed, or
at least have been less-than-successful at challenging it….”

“The one Microsoft challenger that has had serious success in
threatening Microsoft is Linux.”

“It is still far from dethroning Microsoft, but it is enough of
one to seriously worry Microsoft’s strategists, as the Halloween
Documents so abundantly demonstrate. The next question is, of
course, why Linux has succeeded where the others have failed. And
that question might best be answered by considering why the
failures have happened, and why Linux might be an exceptional case.
