“After working some time now for a web hosting company in the
D.C. Metro area, I have come to several conclusions about software,
especially concerning operating systems. As a network
administrator, my primary job function is to keep the customer
happy. In order to accomplish this task, I have to have the
right tools to get that job done. My conclusion is simply this:
There is no better OS for the server than one of the Unix/Linux
variants. I say this from pure experience as an administrator.
All of our servers are meticulously cared for and administered. We
are small and have some high profile clients, being in the D.C.
area.”
“In addition to being the most robust OS available, the *nix
variants give me no trouble day to day. If *nix goes down, it’s
99.9% of the time a hardware fault or a bad network cable, versus
NT and Microsoft 2000 Server BSODing on a regular basis, despite
tweaking the OS to the nth degree. MS has never managed to produce
a good server OS where critical uptime and dependability is
required 24/7.”
