osOpinion: Why the Mozilla Dragon Still Has Bite

“Well, it’s that time again. Everyone seems to love to switch
between lauding the Mozilla team, and blasting them. The WaSP has
unbelievably decided that market pressures and business decisions
are more important than a truly standards compliant, excellent
browser (Read this for an excellent rebuttal). Everywhere I
turn now, I see people lining up to rip on Mozilla. I certainly
agree that many mistakes have been made, but hindsight is 20/20.
Sure lots of stuff could be avoided, but Mozilla is probably the
most important piece of software being written at this point.
As a linux user, I prefer the konqueror browser personally, but
Mozilla is crucial, and a success in many aspects which has been
said before, but should be reiterated….”

“A recent naysayer has mentioned the use of Mozilla as a
platform instead of a browser. While I agree that I prefer a small,
fast, nonbloated browser, I also prefer the same in an Operating
System, but many people don’t. The masses like the features, bells,
and whistles. They want mail integrated, along with other things.
There is quite a paradox presented: critics are calling for Mozilla
to gain market share, and also to be released quickly. If they are
going to truly win users, it is imperative they have a slick GUI, a
mail client, a news client, etc. All of these things take time to
develop. **But due to the component structure of Mozilla, waiting
on the GUI is not necessary**. The gecko rendering engine is
ALREADY being put in stripped down browsers such as Galeon, and
surely more will come.”
