“A search for UNIX system administration jobs on Dice.com will
show you how unimportant UNIX certifications are. Certifications
for Solaris, HP-UX, Linux, other UNIXes and UNIX in general exist,
but recruiting agencies rarely ask for them.”
“I have worked in six different companies in Silicon Valley for
the past three years as a UNIX sysadmin, including both small and
large shops, and in not one place have I found managers who viewed
certifications as important. I have not met one sysadmin who had a
certification, or even considered having one.”
“There are four main reasons why UNIX certifications will never
catch on. One, there are too many different UNIX flavors and
platforms (Solaris, HP-UX, Linux, IRIX, BSD, etc.). Certifications
are used by human resources departments and other hiring
bureaucracies to cubbyhole people for a nice fit. But should a BSD
wizard be less considered for a job simply because he or she has
never worked with System V?”
