Ottawa Citizen: Linux now big enough to be a Microsoft target

“It takes powerful air conditioning to keep the technology
testing gear cool at PC Week Labs in Foster City. The chill in the
conference room had a different source.

“You couldn’t miss the mutual disdain as several Microsoft Corp.
managers faced off with several members of the loose-knit but
increasingly effective community that has been pushing the
GNU/Linux operating system — usually known as just plain Linux —
as a competitor to Microsoft’s Windows NT.”

“While this confrontation may have limited meaning as a
real-world battle of technologies — benchmarks have well-known
limitations — it’s another milestone in the progress of a powerful
movement.”
