PC Week: Inprise goes open-source route with InterBase

“Inprise Corp. will open the source code to its InterBase
database to broaden distribution and boost sales of its development
tools and application server, company executives said Monday.”

“At the same time, Inprise intends to spin off the InterBase
division into a separate company that will provide management and
support for the open-source database while continuing
development….”

“Inprise decided to establish a separate InterBase company that,
as a startup, will be able to move faster in the growing Linux and
open-source community than Inprise, Fuller said. Its potential to
go public and enrich employees holding stock options should make it
more attractive to top talent, he added.”
