“When the Old Wizard (that’s what he calls himself) phoned and
told me to check out the folks using Linux as the operating system
for a car radio, I figured it was worth the time to click on the
www.empeg.com site. After all, the Wiz’s track record is pretty
good.”

“But Linux on a radio? Now I’ll be the first to admit that Linux
is worth a close look. The last time we ran the operating system
through its paces at PC Week Labs, we declared it a legitimate
contender for the enterprise space. Lately, the big old-line
vendors such as IBM have been hedging their bets by throwing a few
dollars into Linux-based startups such as Red Hat.”

“However, the idea of being able to turn your car radio into an
MP3 jukebox along with a GPS navigator and an e-mail reader is the
stuff that Microsoft and the big guns of the audio industry have
been trotting out in concept cars at auto shows for the last couple
of years.”
