PC Week: Oracle defends e-biz turf [& promises Linux-based network computer]

“…[Oracle CEO Larry] Ellison — convinced that the consumer
thin-client market is ready for prime time — is gearing up to
launch a second network computer spin-off, dubbed New Internet
Computer Co. Nicknamed ‘Nic,’
the clandestine company will be
run by former high-tech journalist Gina Smith, a source within
Oracle confirms.”

“According to Ellison, the new company will sell $199
Intel-powered machines that run Linux. Netscape Navigator will come
bundled
with the product, he says.”

“Ellison originally suggested that products would ship in the
first quarter of 2000. But, with the spin-off still under a shroud
of secrecy and its Web site not yet functional, that goal appears
very unlikely.”
