Apple’s been a popular topic of late with the recent release of
OS X and associated columns lauding and decrying its approach to
open source software. This column falls under the latter category,
issuing a condemnation of a broadside for floundering Linux support
and accusing the company of releasing uncompilable source for
Darwin. A brief interlude also asks whether open source advocates
have become “addicted to acceptance.”

“The open source community has become addicted to
acceptance. Since Netscape open sourced mozilla, OSS advocates have
become addicted to companies releasing their software source. Is it
merely an natural inclination to be accepted? Is there a feeling of
victory that makes these business functions become like a prophecy
from God to OSS advocates. Whatever the case, when a company like
Apple or Netscape open sources something as big as their operating
system or browser, many people give them a mile of slack. Many
people choose to turn their head and look the other way when they
fumble things.”
