buzz about ‘Windows Everywhere.’ Windows will no longer be a mere
gui program running on DOS. Windows will become the Operating
System of choice for mainframes, desktops, servers, and devices.
Microsoft reveals how their upcoming Cairo, Chicago, and Modular
Windows projects will make ‘Windows Everywhere’ a reality. For
a long time, ‘Windows Everyhwere’ was an unchallenged view of the
future. After all, the exciting new Windows NT product expanded
Windows grasp into the RISC hardware arena. Windows was a
juggernaut and few if any pundits questioned the ability of Windows
to become the Everywhere OS.“
“The year is 2000 and the Everywhere OS has taken hold.
Unfortunately, it is not who the pundits thought it would be in
1993. Windows NT has dropped Alpha, MIPS, and PowerPC support.
There are no NT mainframes and NT Datacenter is about as warmly
received as fruitcake for Christmas. On the desktop Windows is
still nothing more than GUI for DOS (albeit, better hidden) .
Windows CE is so great that MS has had to make a smaller version of
NT (Embedded NT) to try to capture the device market. All in all,
Windows has gone from a mind-share commander and generator of
excitement to being about as exciting as socks for Christmas. Note:
excessive Christmas references imply nothing about the poor quality
of gifts this author received last year and is not subtle hint to
would be gift givers (and you know who you are) to not be such
cheap buggers.”
