“…In a new economy that frequently overturns the rules of the
old, even industry leaders have to scramble to reinvent themselves.
Take the case of Intel Corp., which has been receiving a rude
awakening that its near-monopoly of the desktop PC market doesn’t
necessarily translate to automatic success in the Internet
arena.”

“Apart from problems in supplying Pentium III and Celeron chips
since October last year and the resurgence of long-time rival
Advanced Micro Devices Inc., the chip giant now faces the challenge
of upstart Transmeta Corp. Founded in 1995, Transmeta has been
generating a lot of excitement since the announcement of its Crusoe
chip family this January.”

The Crusoe challenge, however, goes deeper than the latest
attempt of a chip company to wrest the leadership from Intel.
Transmeta claims that mobile Internet computing requires no less
than a new “smart architecture” for processors.
Since they
supposedly consume less power than Intel and AMD chips, Crusoe is
particularly targeted at the ultralight portables, handheld
computers and other web appliances.”
