Business Machines Corp. and Red Hat Software said they formed an
alliance to put the Linux operating system on IBM servers,
workstations and personal computers. ?The Red Hat alliance
demonstrates IBM’s commitment to the open-source movement,? said
Bill McCracken, an IBM representative. A development lab will be
established to create high-performance and reliability standards
for Red Hat Linux on IBM servers and client systems, the company
said. IBM will not sell computers directly with Linux, but its
resellers will load the operating system on IBM machines (NP
