Processor.com: Browsing for a Browser

“‘The browser wars are over,’ proclaim the pundits. ‘Internet
Explorer is the victor.’ If you are looking at current market
share, those claims seem correct. However, all that may be about to
change.

“Why? Two reasons: The first is that Microsoft has announced
that the next version of Internet Explorer will be tied directly to
a new operating system. Current Windows users will be unable to
upgrade IE past V6 without upgrading to the future new operating
system. Given that many in the industry expect that it could be
three years before this new operating system makes its debut, IE
won’t experience any major enhancements until about 2006.

“The second is the rise of Linux and open source. Linux is
beginning to be evaluated on U.S. corporate desktops and is already
beginning to appear on government desktops throughout Europe and
Asia. And none of those desktops will be running IE…”
