“The Opera controversy has simmered down recently, but the
standards issue is more visible than ever. Microsoft is apparently
planning to phase out the standalone Internet Explorer in favor of
a browser that is an integral part of the operating system. If this
sounds familiar, it’s because a court ruling in the anti-trust case
against Microsoft was what forced the company to separate browser
from operating system in the first place.

“Now ponder the implications for the next version of Windows,
code-named Longhorn, and expected to include new security features
to thwart hacker attacks. Do you want to stick with an unsupported
and increasingly out-of-date Internet Explorer? If not, your only
option may be to upgrade to Longhorn, and that’s an expensive
