Retouching photos (2/2)

“In my last post, I commented on the general possibilities of
how one can refine their photos using Aperture or digiKam. In this
post, I discuss what tools are available for retouching and how
easy it was to use these. As usual, I start of with Aperture and
compare to what one can do with digiKam.

“Aperture
In Aperture, the adjustments are accessed by opening the
adjustments tab and then clicking on the adjustment drop down menu.
It will show you a dozen of brushes and 22 adjustments in total of
which White Balance, Exposure, Enhance, Highlights & Shadows,
Levels and Colors are the default set. In general, Aperture offers
adjustments to change the colors in your photo (White Balance,
Levels, Curves, Contrast), to enhance your photos (Enhance,
Highlights & Shadows, Sharpen, Edge Sharpen, Noise Reduction,
Exposure), to correct for lens issues (Devignette, Chromatic
Aberration), to correct for artifacts in your photos (Retouch, Red
Eye Correction and Spot & Patch). Additionally, there are
several effects included, such as Blur, Black and White, Sepia,
etc. and some tools to adjust the geometry of the photo such as
Straighten, Crop, Flip etc. Unfortunately, Apple forgot to organise
the tools. It seems that their place in the menu were rather
random. So, I found my self scrolling up and down the list at quite
some occasions in order to find the tool I was looking for.”
