Review: Linux Browsers, Part 2

“HV3

“HV3 is a world apart from the average web browser. The
browser’s site describes it as an experiment in creating
“modern web browser components” from the Tcl/Tk
platform. The project has two parts, the Hv3 cross-platform browser
and the Tkhtml3 widget for developers.

“HV3 started up in about 8 seconds. YouTube displayed but noted
that Javascript was off or the browser was using an old version of
Flash. Similarly, the base elements of the Pandora homepage
rendered, but not the login dialog. CNN rendered fine, although
multimedia elements were rough. The browser includes a neat
debugging tool “Polipo” that provided a log of
errors.

“Looking through the menu bar, I found an option for ECMAscript,
which provides Javascript support and which was unfortunately also
grayed out. There seemed to be no provisions for add-ons, although
visiting some ad-laden websites showed that none of them displayed
ads – a byproduct of lack of Javascript support? There is an
option that displays cookies, but apparently does not permit users
to delete them. Footprint on startup was super-low: 120kB. (That’s
‘k’ as in ‘k’, not ‘m’.)”
