“Of course, Linuxphiles believe that Windows administrators need
to learn about Linux. But do Windows experts think that’s a lot of
hooey? A little hooey perhaps, but there’s a grain of truth there,
too, according to Windows experts Serdar Yegulalp, Paul E. Hinsberg
and Tony Northrup…“What should Windows pros know about Linux?
“Yegulalp: The very least Windows people should
know about Linux is to have some passing familiarity with it: how
to boot it, what the kernel is, what some of the basic features of
its environment are. Know about Gnome versus KDE, for instance. At
the very least, they should know what not to do to break it.“Northrup: It depends on the shop. If it’s a
small business with one or two IT people, and all the systems are
running Windows now, and running it well, then they don’t need to
know anything about Linux. Keep using Windows; it’ll get the job
done. There’s not much opportunity to realize benefits by switching
to Linux when you’re on such a small scale…”
