“A controversial Microsoft program offering discounts to win
business from lower-priced competitors has only been used twice in
Europe since July, the company’s top lawyer said yesterday…

“‘Under NO circumstances lose against Linux,’ the article quoted
Ayala as saying in the e-mail to other Microsoft executives. Linux
is the so-called open-source, low-price computing platform that has
made inroads in the operating-systems market among businesses.

“In his first public response to the story, Microsoft Senior
Vice President and General Counsel Brad Smith said the program is
lawful, the story was overblown and Ayala’s quote was out of
context…”
