“Spam sucks. It wastes time, ties up bandwidth, hogs disk space,
and insults everyone’s intelligence. Tim Pozar, director of
operations for Brightmail, sees another downside: spam discourages
people from using the Internet – and specifically email – thereby
imposing a bottleneck on a powerful tool for democracy and free
expression. We talked with Pozar about what Brightmail is and does,
and why stopping spam is so important….”

Brightmail seems to be in a better position than most
companies to open source its technology, since so much of your
business is about the service you provide.

“Ever since we started, we’ve been interested in either open
sourcing the rule set – without devaluing the product we’re trying
to sell, of course, since that’s how we stay alive – or open
sourcing part or all of the source code. Those discussions have
been happening in-house since the beginning, and now that we’re
selling this stuff, and doing pretty well at it, we’re certainly
looking for ways to give back to the community. After all, we’ve
been able to stand on the shoulders of open source. Because
sendmail’s been open source practically since the beginning, it was
easy for us to integrate into sendmail. So we’d love to be able to
give back in some manner. We’re discussing how we can do that.”
