“To see just what would be involved in replacing Windows with
Linux as a desktop operating system, I recently tried out two of
the latest releases of the open-source OS, Caldera Systems’
OpenLinux 2.2 and Red Hat Software’s Red Hat Linux 6.0. I also
checked out a word-processing application, Corel’s WordPerfect 8
for Linux. It was my first experience with Linux or any form of
Unix.”

“On the whole, it wasn’t encouraging: Trying to install the new
OS on a machine already set up for Windows 98 brought me up against
a long list of frustrations, and I still don’t have Red Hat
running.”
