“So I was ready to take the plunge. NT 4.0 had driven me off the
deep end one too many times. This time was because it seemed to
stop recognizing my CD Rom drive. What’s that all about? An
operating system isn’t supposed to just stop recognizing your CD
ROM drive. Under advice, my plan was to install Debian Linux. Free
myself from the bonds of tyrrany which had shackled me to NT for
almost two years. But I digress…”

I think my greatest fear of Linux was that I would get
swamped in a command line driven environment where I didn’t know
any commands. It is the development of graphic interfaces for Linux
applications that has encouraged me.

“The first step was to format my hard drive – get rid of those
filthy NT stains on my hard drive. Of course, I backed up all my
essential files before I did anything crazy.”

“From my reading, I had heard that it was easy to install Linux
from Windows and I was thinking of installing 98 in addition to
Linux. After the formatting, my next step was to install Windows
98. Die hards will scoff, but I need to have a comfortable space to
retreat to, in my efforts to learn a new operating system.”
