“Speech technology start-up SpeechWorks International Inc. of
Boston is moving to grab a leadership position in the emerging Web
‘voice portal’ business, announcing it is offering a new
open-source software to link speech portals to each other.”

“In a move that resembles the Linux open-source software
programming code movement, SpeechWorks is making public a system
companies could use to develop and interconnect sites on which
people call in by phone and use their voice to request news
information that is then read back to them, or conduct transactions
such as buying stocks and airplane tickets.”

“As the start-up gears up for an initial public offering this
summer, SpeechWorks officials are gambling that by giving away
their so-called voice XML code, they can fuel faster growth in the
voice portal business and take a big piece of a more quickly
growing pie.”
