“Netbooks at APS run on Linux Ubuntu, which is a free,
open-source operating system distributed on the Internet. That
helps keep costs down, Duran said, and the district mainly uses web
applications that are freely distributed and require no licensing
fees.

“Several computermakers like Dell, Asus and Lenovo have tailored
specific lines to compete for the coveted technology cash that
districts have come into recently.

“Many districts, including APS and CCSD, have used Title I
stimulus funding to finance the purchase of the many of their
netbooks.

“The one-time cash allows many districts to afford the purchase
and widely distribute computers among students. Efforts to pair
each student with a computer, called “one to one,” have
gained attention. And Duran said that APS used a model developed in
part by a small school district in Nebraska, which handed out a
netbook to every one of their 50 incoming freshmen students.”
