“The Linux market is starting to resemble the cola wars, where
Coke and Pepsi dominate and everyone else battles for shelf space.
In the case of Linux, Red Hat and Caldera have the fizz, while
other players like Corel, SuSE and TurboLinux leave me feeling
flat.”

“Like it or not, major hardware vendors and corporate
America don’t want to support five or more flavors of Linux.

It’s just too darned expensive and troublesome to deal with
multiple operating-system vendors.”

“It’s time for some Linux market consolidation, and you’re about
to see it. Just last week, Dell agreed to offer Red Hat Linux as a
standard option across its hardware. And IBM now develops its Linux
apps first for Red Hat and Caldera, before moving on to support
SuSE and TurboLinux. … Non-Linux providers also could take a hit.
Just last week, Weather.com rained on Sun’s parade by dumping
Solaris and switching to IBM Netfinity servers running Linux.”
