Smart Partner: Oracle, Collab.Net To Create Developer Exchange

Oracle applies open-source principles to its Internet
platform.

“Oracle Corp. will announce Monday an exchange based on
open-source principles for Oracle developers to swap skills and
projects. Oracle chose Collab.Net, the start-up co-founded last
year by Apache Software Foundation co-founder Brian Behlendorf, to
host and consult on the exchange, which will go live on Sept. 15.
Collab.Net announced last week that it would host the repository of
code for Sun Microsystems’ StarOffice when Sun releases it in
October.”

“Oracle VP Rene Bonvanie said the shortage of American
developers and the pressure from customers wanting e-business
applications has forced Oracle to find new ways to speed software
development. He says membership in the Oracle Technology Network,
which is free, has exploded from 20,000 to 1 million developers in
the last year and is growing by 3,000 to 4,000 developers per day.
Oracle already licenses the source for software developed on top of
its Internet platform, which includes the Oracle 8i database.”

“Most of the demand for application development is not in the
places where there is high supply. The high supply is in Russia,
India, Pakistan and China, but there’s a huge demand in Silicon
Valley, Boston and Seattle, so there are lots of problems matching
supply and demand,” Bonvanie said.”
