“Red Hat is doing well. But you knew that. What you may not know
though is that while Red Hat had no major news at LinuxWorld 2001
this week, its quartet of minor announcements spell continued
strong technical and business growth.”

“The biggest news to many American readers is the most obscure.
It shouldn’t be. Red Hat and IBM previously announced a deal with
Daiei Information Systems in Japan. The companies will deploy
15,200 Linux servers running the Japanese version of Red Hat Linux
in 7500 Lawson grocery stores in Japan primarily for supply chain
management.”

“While a big deal in and of itself, it’s also one of the biggest
Linux victories over Microsoft to date. These systems will replace
a multitude of Microsoft 95 systems that have been hooked into a
mainframe. Daiei made the move because, according to company
officials, they wanted to reduce support, productivity and
management costs.”
