SRO: Just How Far Will They Go? Partners, open-source movement push Sun Microsystems on Java

Sun Microsystems has begun the arduous task of opening
access to Java, and Sun’s partners say it can’t happen fast
enough.

“Sun VP George Paolini confirms that the company met with key
partners this month–including Apple Computer, IBM, Novell and
Oracle–and is in discussions with a number of others. He declined
to talk about Sun’s plans in detail, but says his first priority is
to fix the Java Community Process so partners feel it is “truly
equitable” without compromising speed….”

“A lot of people care about Java, and we can’t be a specialized
club,” says Novell Internet evangelist Steve Holbrook. “It’s like
the founding fathers, where someone lays down the early ideas and
then their principles live down into the future.” Plus, the Java
compatibility tests must be free and accessible to everyone, says
IBM Java software director Sandy Rankin.”
