“When Debian Sarge was released a year or so ago I decided to
give it a try. However, being relatively new to Linux at the time,
I found the installation process something of a challenge. Not only
was the installer fairly cryptic, Sarge refused to recognise my
Ethernet card, and after struggling to complete the installation I
was eventually dumped to a command prompt with no idea how to
proceed from there. I did eventually manage to launch a desktop
environment but the installation experience only confirmed what
many others have said–that Debian was more suited to experts than
beginners.“Since Sarge was released I have tried many other distros based
on Debian that were/are more geared up to the needs of the
inexperienced user–Knoppix, Mepis, Xandros, Freespire, Kanotix,
and of course everyone’s current favourite, Ubuntu…”
