“According to OCOR, a proprietary player Weblaw fears that it
will lose a number of bids with such courts for its own,
proprietary search engine. The vendor, in a statement sent to
Inside IT: ‘Instead of operating an oversized IT department funded
by tax-payers, the Federal Court should investigate the existing
products available on the market. This would be sustainable and
cost effective.’

“This is quite interesting as the vendor seems to be saying that
instead of using tax-payers’ money wisely by developing
cost-effective in-house capabilities which can be used by other
departments to further cut cost, the department should rely on
proprietary software where price and code is controlled by the
company. Additionally, proprietary software is also more insecure
than the free softrware.”
