IT has been no exception to this and while it seems improbable, many authorities are turning to open source to not only sustain operations but also to improve service delivery to employees.

Greater adoption of open source is being encouraged throughout the public sector by central government, which has gone as far as recommending a “preference” for open source in the Government Service Design Manual.

In addition the manual argues that proprietary products must only be used in “rare” circumstances. With such encouragement, open source adoption within the public sector is only set to increase.
