“A day after Microsoft detailed pricing for Windows 2000, rival
operating systems developer Sun Microsystems shot back on Tuesday
with an inexpensive promotional preview program for Solaris 8.”

“For $20, Sun’s Early Access Program lets users preview Sun’s
high-end Unix system. Included in the package are beta software, a
license, documentation, and other tools. Available for Sparc and
Intel systems, Solaris 8 will ship in February, the same month Win
2000 is scheduled to hit store shelves….”

“Sun also launched a broadside at the application upgrades
required by Win 2000, saying existing Solaris applications are
already compatible with Solaris 8 software. Sun’s certification
tool, AppCert, also helps assure compatibility.
