“Microsoft unveiled the product road map and gave a glowing
status report on Windows 2000 at its annual TechEd event in
Orlando, Fla. Group vice president Bob Muglia said more than 1.5
million copies of Windows 2000 server have sold and that there is
now a stable of 8,500 shipping applications. Muglia also
re-stressed Microsoft’s mantra that Windows 2000 is by far the most
reliable Windows product ever.”
“That, however, begs the point, some said. They maintain even
Windows proponents say Windows NT server 4.0 significantly lags Sun
Microsystems’ Solaris, and even Linux, in reliability. Sorensen
said there is a perception that Windows NT (now called Windows
2000) had reboot and other issues and Microsoft has to prove its
reliability and scalability to customers.”
“…the problem for Microsoft, especially in e-commerce, is that
what the company started touting six months ago for its Site Server
E-commerce Edition Version 4 is now already offered by competitors,
and the Microsoft site server is still not available. Microsoft
is very late with its products and that will have a negative impact
on its ability to compete,” said Shawn Willett, an analyst at
Current Analysis, Sterling, Va. “The market has run past
Microsoft.”
