“Responding to a question in Parliament this afternoon, South
African minister of public service and administration Geraldine
Fraser-Moleketi described in detail her department’s support for
open source software in the delivery of public services. In her
response to a question from ANC MP Andries Nel, Fraser-Moleketi
said OSS was already widely used by government and was ‘part of a
deliberate strategy aimed at generating widespread knowledge and
understanding [of ICT].’

“‘OSS has recently emerged as a powerful way of generating
knowledge as well as economic value… and we are working on this
quite extensively,’ said Moleketi…”
