[ Thanks to Gregory

“With the release of the latest Linux kernel, version 2.2.14, a
new doorway has been opened to the Linux platform, Computer
Telephony. This is the first kernel to include support for a
telephony device. [Note: The telephony code actually first appeared
in the 2.2.14pre15 kernel.] There is also a new device,
/dev/phoneX, and module, phonedev, both of which are available for
use by all telephony devices.

“While there have been a variety of Linux based telephony
applications, projects, and drivers, this marks the first time
telephony support has been included in the kernel itself.”

“The stability and performance of Linux are just what is
required to meet the demands of telephony applications.”
