“Today, the Ada Initiative began a census of women in
open technology and culture. The study should provide a much-needed
update, and I look forward to the results, despite some quibbles
about methodology.

“For the Ada Initiative, the point of the study is “to know what
women are working on and how each community’s culture affects
women,” according to co-founder Valerie Aurora. “We also want to
know where to direct our work in helping women in the community.”
The plan is to repeat the study to provide an ongoing picture.

“This is a goal I fully support for its own sake, as anybody who
notices my byline on articles might have noticed from time to
time.”
