“Australian growth was fuelled by the mid-range segment, which
grew at almost 20 per cent,” IDC servers analyst John Blair
said.”

“Mr Blair said mid-range NT sales were a disaster, slipping to a
meagre $1 million from $6 million in 1997.”

“Linux was yet to make an impression, Mr Blair said, although
the free operating system was gathering momentum in
enterprises.”

“During the second half of the year, Linux was building up among
technical people who see that it is very flexible and robust,” he
said.
